Outreach
The mission of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is to serve the artistically talented, gifted middle and high school students of South Carolina through programs of pre-professional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence. The school is a resource for all students and teachers in South Carolina. As a resource for educators and students, the Governor's School reaches out to schools throughout the state, offering workshops, clinics, lectures, performances, and professional development opportunities to teachers and students. A favorite opportunity for teachers to earn recertification is the Teachers' Institutes, week-long residential arts concentrations for teachers throughout the state.
Performances and exhibitionss are ongoing at the Governor's School, and most are free and open to the public. For example, during the school year, music recitals are held nearly every alternating Friday. School groups often visit the campus to attend a recital, take a tour, and have lunch on the campus.
Other on-campus offerings include masterclasses or workshops with faculty or guest artists. On-campus outreach offers students and teachers the opportunity to interact with the Governor's School facilities, faculty and students firsthand.
Teachers can also arrange for faculty outreach on-site at their schools, and area representatives are available to give presentations to district staff, teachers, students, parents and community organizations about opportunities available to SC's emerging artists.
Programs are open to educators and schools in all regions of South Carolina.
Outreach offerings are specific to each arts or academic discipline. For more information contact Kelly Near at 864.282.3706.
